Description
“In Tibetan there is a word that points to the root cause of aggression, the root cause also of craving. It points to a familiar experience that is at the root of all conflict, all cruelty, oppression, and greed. This word is shenpa.” (Ani Pema Chödrön)
Shenpa is easy to identify – it’s the charge of emotion we feel when we have a strong reaction to something. It’s the seduction to react automatically, habitually. Someone criticizes your work and you suddenly feel the urge to retaliate, inwardly at yourself or outwardly at them. Someone compliments your cooking and you’re elated. Those rushes, the seductive charge? Shenpa. It’s the hook in the water the fish bites, because the food looks familiar. Fish may not be able to recognize the hook for the trap it is, but humans can.
